Three arrested for trafficking meth, leading police in chase
KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WACH) – Three people are now behind bars after a vehicle pursuit in a stolen car and a foot pursuit while they trafficked methamphetamine.
According to Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews, 33-year-old Michael Lee Dotson is charged with grand larceny of a vehicle, trafficking methamphetamine, driving under suspension and malicious injury to property.
Thirty-one-year-old Maurice Actona Williams is charged with trafficking meth and simple possession of marijuana. Twenty-six-year-old Kayla Koumas was charged with trafficking meth.
“Drugs, drugs, drugs. The common thread in just about every issue we deal with is drugs and people who are on them,” said Sheriff Jim Matthews. “People who are normal and rational do abnormal and irrational things when they are on drugs. Drug dealing is not a victimless crime as some would have us believe.”
According to a release, a blue Toyota Camry was stolen from the Pilot truck stop on US 601 during the early morning hours of August 16 when the owner left the vehicle running while he went inside the truck stop.
A witness was able to identify Dotson as the person who stole the vehicle. Later in the day, KCSO investigators who were familiar with Dotson, and the area where he frequents, began a search for the stolen car.
While searching for the vehicle, 911 dispatch received a call regarding a shoplifting that happened in the Town of Elgin. The suspect’s vehicle in that incident matched the description of the stolen Camry.
Investigators who were in the area observed the Camry, which was being driven by Dotson and occupied by Williams and Koumas as it was travelling on White Pond Rd. The investigators attempted to make a traffic stop, but Dotson fled at a high rate of speed, passing cars on double yellow lines and speeding through intersections.
Investigators then saw Dotson throwing items out of the window during the chase. As the vehicle slowed down when it came to a T in the road, Dotson and Williams jumped from the moving car, which ultimately crashed into a parked vehicle and fled on foot.
Investigators chased after the two, capturing both Dotson and Williams. Koumas, who remained in the backseat, was taken into custody immediately.
Investigators recovered just under 20 grams of methamphetamine, a small amount of marijuana and $400 in cash. All three suspects were transported to the Kershaw County Detention Center.
