Desegregate?- A federal judge has approved a settlement that would allow the state of Arkansas to stop making payments to three school districts, which would aid efforts to de-segregate. The money goes toward magnet schools and busing.
Bourbon Buyout-Two american legends are now foreign-owned. Japan's Suntory Holdings is buying the distillers of Jim Beam and Maker's Mark bourbons. Shares of Beam went up by 25% on the news in trading. Both companies' boards unanimously approved the transaction.
Water Hike-Outrage after a rate hike proposal for water customers across the Midlands. The increase from Carolina Water Service, Inc. would affect neighborhoods in Gaston, Irmo, Lexington and West Columbia. The revenue would go towards improving the current water delivery system.
Feeding the Homeless-Chick-fil-A continues to give to those in need. The food chain has teamed up with the Oliver Gospel Mission to feed and provide for the homeless every Tuesday in January. While local volunteers provide medical care and clothing, Chick-fil-A provides food and encouragement. Another feeding is set for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Oliver Gospel Mission.
DirecTV ditches the weather-DirecTv customers, say goodbye to The Weather Channel. The company dropped the channel from its line ups during its battle over contract talks. DirecTv said the move to drop the channel was partly in response to "numerous customer complaints that more than 40 percent of the weather channel's programming is dedicated to reality television shows.''
