Top GOP consultant, 4 others charged in State House corruption probe

COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) - Powerful South Carolina political consultant, Richard Quinn, and four others have been indicted in an ongoing probe into State House corruption.

Quinn was indicted Wednesday on criminal conspiracy and illegal lobbying charges. Criminal conspiracy carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.

For decades, Quinn has helped a number of political figures rise to power, dealing mainly with Republicans. His list of clients includes Gov. Henry McMaster, Attorney General Alan Wilson, U.S. Rep .Joe Wilson, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, U.S. Sen. John McCain, former Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell.

In March, SLED agents raided a Columbia office that housed Quinn's consulting business.

The ongoing probe is being headed up by special prosecutor, David Pascoe, who was appointed by Alan Wilson.

The State Grand Jury also issued indictments against four others on Wednesday, including former and current lawmakers.

Former House Judiciary Committee chairman, James Harrison, was indicted on criminal conspiracy and misconduct in office charges. Right now, the 66-year-old Columbia attorney is the director of the South Carolina Legislative Council which provides research and legal services to the General Assembly.

Ex-Horry County state representative Tracy Edge was indicted on criminal conspiracy, misconduct in office and perjury charges. During his time in office, the Republican was a member of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Grand jurors also issued new indictments for two lawmakers already facing charges. Rep. Rick Quinn, the elder Quinn's son, was charged with criminal conspiracy. Sen. John Courson was charged with statutory misconduct in office. Both men already faced other misconduct charges and are currently suspended.
