TRAVELERS REST, S.C. (AP) -- Travelers Rest has voted to annex Furman University.
The city council moved Thursday night at the request of the school just north of Greenville, which wanted better fire and police protection.
Mayor Wayne McCall says it's a historic move that puts one of the greatest universities in the country into the city. The 927-acre move increases the size of Travelers Rest by one third.
Furman had contracted with the Travelers Rest Fire Department since December after the school was unable to reach a new agreement with the Duncan Chapel Fire Department which has provided protection since the 1970s.
The annexation includes the entire campus and golf course.
Furman President Rod Smolla said the university was pleased to find a "one-stop" location that could provide fire, police and court services.
