Two Lee County deputies involved in shooting

Two Lee County deputies were shot after a mid afternoon traffic stop.

LEE COUNTY, SC (WACH)- Two Lee County deputies are recovering after being shot.

Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon said a deputy with his traffic unit stopped a man for a traffic violation on Spring Hill Road about 1:45 p.m. When the deputy went to the man's car, the officer smelled marijuana. He called for backup. When another deputy arrived the suspect began acting erratically.

Simon said early reports indicate the suspect pulled a gun and began shooting at the deputies. A Bishopville police officer soon arrived on scene and helped the deputies arrest the suspect.

It's not clear to us who shot the suspect. Simon said the initial investigation points to the suspect shooting himself.

Sheriff Simon said the deputies' injuries are non-life threatening. The deputies were taken to area hospitals.

Simon said bullet proof vests likely saved the deputies lives.

As is customary when an officer is involved in a shooting, the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating.
