COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Six South Carolina military veterans whose cremated remains went unclaimed are being laid to rest with military honors at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
Thursday's ceremony is scheduled to take place with the cooperation of the American Legion, the Missing in America Project and the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. Incarcerated youth in the care of the department and its carpentry program designed and built the urns being used in the ceremony.
DJJ Director Margaret Barber says the program allows the youngsters to give back to their community. She is attending the ceremony and accepting a flag on behalf of the veterans.
The 585-acre national cemetery is located on property formerly held by Fort Jackson.
