IRMO, SC (WACH) - A tip from local convenience store owner, Kenny Patel, helped Richland county Deputies locate the man suspected of robbing his store.
Sheriff Leon Lott says the suspect is a 34 year old Asian man who first broke into a home in the Harbison area Wednesday night. There he stole a Nissan truck and a 9mm pistol, loaded with 4 magazines.
They say he also went to a Sunoco gas station off of Broad River Road Thursday night, robbing the place.
"He asked me for fifty dollars," said Kenny Patel, owner of the convenience store.
Patel says he decided to take action once the suspect raised his shirt to reveal the gun.
"I just wanted to get him of the store, so I gave him fifty dollars of gas," said Patel. "He went out of the store, I locked the store and called 911."
Patel says he gave police a description of the suspect and of the type of truck he was driving. According to deputies, once the suspect was located, they chased him down Broad River Road where he hit a mail box and spun out.
"At that time our deputies stopped the vehicles, got out, started giving verbal commands to the individual inside the truck," said Sheriff Lott. "He never responded verbally to them. All of sudden he rolled the window down and started shooting at our deputies."
Sheriff Lott says the suspect was killed during the exchange of gunfire in front of the Fatz Cafe in Irmo. A bullet ricocheted off of a deputy's boot, but sheriff lot says the officer was not hurt.
