Thu, 26 Sep 2013 02:42:10 GMT — COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) - 150 customers will be without natural gas services tonight, after SCE&G crews secured a gas leak on Sumter and Richland streets. Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins says calls were made around 4pm about the natural gas leak. He says about 12 to 14 people were evacuated from buildings adjacent to the leak. Once SCE&G crews arrived on the scene to start digging around the gas leak, Jenkins says sparks from a machine or a possible power line ignited the gas which started a fire. "We took precautionary measures," said Jenkins. "We actually had hose lines in place and water supply established." No injuries have been reported, however, streets in that area will remain closed while crews work to repair the gas line.
The street closures include Sumter Street between Calhoun Street and Laurel Street, and Richland Street between Main Street and Marion Street.
