COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- This week's flurry of welcome events is over and the press of classes is now reality for University of South Carolina's new students.
University spokeswoman Megan Sexton says about 4,900 freshmen are part of the 30,000 students on the campus of the state's largest university.
Sexton says the first 500 students who make it through the first day of classes on Thursday are going to get a "I survived the first day of classes" T-shirt at a planned celebration with food and music.
The event is being held at Bates Carolina Diner from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
