USC to host event to welcome minority students

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Members of the faculty, staff and leaders of several student organizations are hosting an event to welcome students of color to the University of South Carolina.

University spokeswoman Megan Sexton says Wednesday's scheduled event begins at 4 p.m. in the Russell House Ballroom.

Sexton says incoming freshmen will have the chance to meet and discuss issues with those attending. The leaders of several multicultural groups are also expected to be on hand.

A cookout is scheduled for 5 p.m., organized by the Association of African American Students.

Some 4,900 students have been accepted into the university's 2013 freshmen class.

Last year, there were about 5,500 minority undergraduate, graduate and professional students on the Columbia campus.
