MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- Republican State Rep. Thad Viers of Myrtle Beach says he's a candidate for South Carolina's new 7th Congressional District seat.
Viers issued a statement Thursday saying the area needs a conservative leader who worries about the next generation, not just the next election.
The predominantly Republican district was created in the northeastern corner of the state after population growth gave South Carolina another seat in Congress.
Gov. Nikki Haley signed the legislation creating the district earlier this week, but the map still must be approved by the Justice Department.
Others considering the race include State Rep. Alan Clemmons, Mande Wilkes, who has run for the South Carolina House, and Georgetown County businessman Jim Mader.
