Weapons found in students' possession at Irmo High School

Two Irmo High School students have been suspended after bringing weapons to school in a backpack.

Irmo, SC (WACH) - A 9-mm Hi Point handgun and a folding-blade knife were found in students' possession at Irmo High School on Monday.

Both weapons were found after a fight occured at the school according to Lexington-Richland District 5 spokesperson, Buddy Price.

The bag belonged to a 15-year-old male student, whose name cannot be released.

Officials with the Lexington County Sheriff's Department said Devon Tariek Brawley, 17, possessed the bag containing the gun when it was taken to be searched by administrators. Brawley was searched upon his arrest, and the school resource officer found a Frost black-and-white, folding-blade knife clipped to the boxer shorts he was wearing under his jeans.

The two students were suspended with a recommendation for expulsion. A third student was suspended for fighting.

Brawley was arrested on charges of possessing a firearm on school grounds and carrying a weapon on school grounds.

The knife and handgun were never taken from the backpack or used in a threatening manner.

The 15-year-old student has been released to his mother's custody, but the resource school officer will recommend that the 11th Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office prosecute him in family court in Lexington County on a charge of possessing a firearm on school grounds.

Classes were able to continue as scheduled and will be held as usual tomorrow.

Lexington County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident.
