COLUMBIA (WACH) â?? The West Columbia Police Department is taking a stand against underage drinking on the Congaree River. Chief Dennis Tyndallâ??s offices will be patrolling from the banks and from the water this weekend in an effort to curb violations.
â??We have noticed an increase of young people drinking while tubing and swimming in the river. This has also led to increased littering as they throw cans and bottles in the water to avoid detection. Our officers will be actively patrolling in an effort to keep the river both beautiful and safe.â?? Said Chief Tynall.
Violators can face fines of over $1,000 and possible jail time for offenses including littering, drinking in public, and minor in possession of alcohol.
