Why do we celebrate Memorial Day?

People packed the sandy shores of the SCE&G Recreation Area Monday, sneaking in those last few rays of sun before heading back to work.

LEXINGTON, SC (WACH) -- Lake Murray was one of the most popular places over Memorial Day weekend. People packed the sandy shores of the SCE&G Recreation Area Monday, sneaking in those last few rays of sun before heading back to work.

As people enjoyed the sand and sun, WACH FOX stopped by to find out how many people know why we celebrate Memorial Day. Watch the video above for the sometimes informative and sometimes comical responses.

Here is the real answer: Memorial Day honors those who have died in all American wars. It was made a national holiday in 1971, but Memorial Day first began three years after the Civil War ended. It was called Decoration Day -- a time to decorate the graves of our fallen heroes. It was held in late May when flowers for the graves would be in bloom throughout the nation.
