Winthrop trustees: Football still a possibility

Winthrop University trustees are still considering adding a football program, despite last month's firing of the university president who was leading the inquiry.

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) -- Winthrop University trustees are still considering adding a football program, despite last month's firing of the university president who was leading the inquiry.

Board Chairwoman Kathy Bigham told The Herald of Rock Hill (http://bit.ly/1xht5F0 ) the board could discuss the possibility after classes start next month. Officials are awaiting an economic impact study conducted by four Winthrop students who are seeking a master's degree in business administration.

Professor Steven Frankforter says they will likely complete their findings in early August.

The board fired Jamie Comstock Williamson in June, less than a year into her tenure. She had set a goal of growing enrollment at the public liberal arts university by 1,000 students over five years.

Officials believe adding a football team would boost the school's name recognition and attract more students.
