Boyfriend of woman found dead in wheelchair also charged with murder

COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) - The Richland County Sheriff's Department is adding a murder charge to the boyfriend of a woman found dead in a wheelchair at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital Friday, July 7.

Albertus Lewis is now charged with murder, along with obstruction of justice, in connection with the July 5 incident, according to the deputies.

On Wednesday, July 5 at approximately 4:30 AM, a 20-year-old female was dropped off at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital with a gunshot wound to the upper body.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has identified the woman as Mayra Sanchez of Columbia. Sanchez was pronounced dead at 6:14 a.m.

An autopsy indicated that the cause of death was due to a gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators discovered that Albertus, the victim's boyfriend, placed her in a wheelchair, took her to the hospital, and fled the location. Once found, the woman was pronounced dead.
