LEXINGTON COUNTY (WACH) - Detectives with the Lexington County Sheriff's Department are investigating a shooting that left one woman dead.
Sheriff James R. Metts says the body of a 43-year-old woman was found around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday on Lumberjack Drive near Earline Drive in West Columbia.
The Lexington County coroner's office identified the woman as Paula D. Justice.
An autopsy revealed she was killed by the single gun shot wound to her upper body.
Metts says two men working to repossess a car in the area saw the woman and called authorities.
"They heard a shot they didn't see a car or see anyone but then discovered this individual. At the time the individual was still alive but wasn't able to correspond," said Sheriff Metts.
Initial reports said Justice was taken to a hospital where she later died. After an autopsy was performed, the coroner's office determined she died within minutes after being shot due to the bullet penetrating an organ in her body.
The department is currently following leads to identify suspects, according to Metts. A motive for the shooting has not yet been determined.
