Gamecocks' Walker likely out for game 1

OMAHA, NE. (WACH) - Gamecocks Coach Ray Tanner says USC first baseman Christian Walker may not play in Game 1 of the College World Series finals against Florida.

Game 1 is Monday night at TD Ameritrade Park.

Walker's injury happened during his last at-bat against Virginia. Tanner says Walker could still play, but right now he doesn't see enough progress (in the healing) that he was hoping to see.

Meantime, both teams met the media Sunday for the final time before Monday's best-of-three series gets underway.

"Ironic that two SEC teams get to go head to head, here in Omaha," said Florida Coach Kevin O'Sullivan. "We feel like the SEC is the best conference in the country."

The Gamecocks need two wins against O'Sullivan's Gators to win back-to-back titles for the first time in school history.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for both of us to be here," said Tanner. "There are so many great teams throughout the country."

Florida announced it would start sophomore right hander Hudson Randall against the Gamecocks in Game 1. Randall threw a complete game in Florida's only win against the Gamecocks this season.

Tanner indicated he may go with freshman Forrest Koumas in Game 1.
