COLUMBIA (WACH) - The SC woman who drove her children into the Atlantic Ocean has been identified as 32 year old Ebony Wilkerson.
Her sister phoned police to tell them that Wilkerson had been acting strangely and talking about demons the day before she left her house. The sister says Wilkerson was stateing that she was afraid of her ex-husband, and was going to a "safe place" provided by a domestic violence shelter, but refused to give the location. Police spotted her black Honda Odyssey Wednesday and pulled her over for a well-being check but had no cause to take her into custody, saying she was lucid with children buckled in the backseat.
Two hours later the woman drove her minivan into the ocean in Daytona Beach with her three children, ages 3, 9 and 10 years old.
Bystanders witnessing the event rushed to help and say the two older childern were screaming for help and saying "Our mommy's trying to kill us". The children also told rescuers that there was another small child in the car, something the mother neglected to mention as she walked away with what witnesses describe as an "awful blank look".
All three children were pulled to safety, taken to the hospital and are now in the custody of The Florida Department of Children and Families. Wilkerson is still in the hospital undergoing a mental evaluation and will be interviewed by police to determine if charges will be filed.
