Gamecocks Ready for Duke Showdown

After Duke predictably took down Troy in the opening round of the NCAA tournament on Friday, the question then was who would be their second round opponent. That answer turned out to be the South Carolina Gamecocks, who took down Marquette 93-73 in front of a packed house at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville.

While many people are applauding the Gamecocks for winning their first NCAA tournament game in 44 years, the Gamecock players want to keep winning... and they have the belief that they can take down the mighty Duke Blue Devils.

"We're a good team! If not, we wouldn't be here," said South Carolina head coach Frank Martin. "They've had a lot of, I don't wanna say distractions, but injuries... Coach K, when he couldn't be around the team with his back situation. Now, they've been rolling here and, over the last four or five weeks, they're healthy, they're being consistent."

"No time to enjoy it," senior Justin McKie said about their 1st round win. "We enjoyed it a little bit when coach came in here and talked to us, but now it's back to business. We gotta go back to the hotel, watch some Duke film 'cause we haven't seen them yet and get ready to play 'em."

"I don't think it's any different," freshman Rakym Felder said about the preparation for Marquette and Duke. "This is March. Every team is gonna come out at their best so I think we just gotta play, stay the course, and grind it out."

South Carolina senior Sindarius Thornwell said, "We're gonna go out and have fun. There's no pressure. It's a basketball game and it doesn't matter who's out there. We're gonna try and go out there and have fun and play our game and guard and I feel like our fans are gonna be there to support us."

The tip-off for (7)South Carolina vs (2)Duke is scheduled for 8:40 pm on Sunday night at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. They haven't met since 2001 and have never played each other in the NCAA tournament.
