Lawmaker wants to rename field after Coach Tanner

Richland County Senator John Courson wants to rename Carolina Stadium, "Ray Tanner Field at Carolina Stadium."

COLUMBIA (WACH) - Richland County Senator John Courson wants to rename Carolina Stadium, "Ray Tanner Field at Carolina Stadium", in honor of the Gamecocks coach.

Tanner's Gamecocks brought back the school's second straight baseball national championship with a 5-2 win over the Florida Gators Tuesday.

"Obviously, very flattering that somebody would even put that out," said Tanner. "I don't deserve to have my name on anything, these guys [his team] might deserve their names, but not me."

Courson says he's speaking with members of the board of trustees about the name change. He believes it would pave the way for an eventual corporate sponsorship.
