Serena Williams to return to professional tennis in Asheville
Tennis superstar Serena Williams will make her long-awaited return to tennis this weekend in Asheville when she represents the United States in Fed Cup alongside sister Venus Williams. Team USA will take on the Netherlands in first round of the competition.
Serena famously won the Australian Open in 2017 while eight weeks pregnant, beating sister Venus in the final. She has not played a professional match since giving birth to her daughter in September, but did play an exhibition earlier this year to test out where she was fitness-wise.
Williams pulled out of this year's Australian Open last month saying she wasn't quite ready to win professional tournaments at that time. Signing up to play in Fed Cup, however, is a great sign that Serena feels ready to get back into the swing of things as a new mom.
The event is close to sold out. Once the Williams sisters committed to the event a couple of weeks ago, tickets went fast. You can check for ticket details at: usta.com/fedcup.
Team USA will take on the Netherlands at the US Cellular Arena in Asheville, North Carolina. The first round is a two-day event beginning on Saturday, February 10th at 1 pm ET. The tie will wrap up on Sunday, February 11th. The United States is the defending Fed Cup champion and they are the heavy favorites to beat the Netherlands this weekend.
