South Carolina lands another 'Mr. Football'

USC recruit Shaq Roland speaks to the media after signing his letter of intent Wednesday.

Lexington, S.C. (WACH) - The Gamecock football team netted a big commitment on National Signing Day.

Lexington High School Wide Receiver Shaq Roland signed a letter of intent to play for USC.

"It's a great day for me, it shows all my hard work," said Roland. "I want to thank my family and friends."

Roland's decision is not a shock to those who follow recruiting closely, as he verbally committed to USC last year.

The six-foot-one Roland, who also played basketball for the Wildcats, will only play football for the Gamecocks.

"They've had great recruiting classes and I want to be a part of that," said Roland.

Roland is the 4th consecutive Mr. Football award winner to play for USC. He joins Stephon Gilmore (2008), Marcus Lattimore (2009) and Jadeveon Clowney (2010).

Three of Roland's teammates also signed LOIs.

Tight End Taquan West will play for South Carolina State, Receiver Jalen Cook is heading to Newberry, and Linebacker Rivers Bedenbaugh will play for Wingate.

"Hopefully this kind of day at Lexington High School will inspire some of our kids to work a little harder and do the same thing," said Head Coach Scott Early.
