WACH: Former Gamecock QB's Orth; Garcia teach football beyond the field
COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) -- It's one thing to learn how to play quarterback from two guys who played in the Southeastern Conference on the field but it's another to learn from them in the classroom.
That's exactly what former Gamecock quarterbacks Perry Orth and Stephen Garcia did on Saturday at Heathwood Hall, part of their final QB1 Athletics camp of the summer.
"There's a lot of stuff that isn't really taught at the high school level," explained Orth, who developed QB1 Athletics as a way to help young football stars improve their game. "I believe if I would've known (some of the information I know now after playing college football), I would've been a significantly different player in high school and that's what Stephen [Garcia] and I are both trying to give back."
While the two put campers through a variety of drills on the field, Orth and Garcia focused just as much, if not more, on the importance of learning information during positional meetings by teaching them how to watch film properly and creating different situations by drawing coverages up on a whiteboard.
"Perry said, 'man we should team-up and start running camps,'" said Garcia. "The kids are taking notes and have been enjoying it and I'm excited to see how it will continue to grow in the future."
