AC Flora wins 3A baseball state championship

AC Flora defeated Airport 11-3 to win the 3A baseball state championship.

COLUMBIA (WACH)- For the second consecutive year, the AC Flora Falcons are 3A baseball state champions. Sophomore Donald Gillespie had a two-run home run in the first inning and Matt Wallace pitched the final three innings scoreless to close out Airport 11-3 in game two of the three-game series.

"What can I say about our guys?" AC Flora head coach Andy Hallett said. "We go up there (Fort Mill) and win it with a bunch of kids, lose some great seniors, but we brought kids back with great experience and they played like champions all year."

After coming from behind to win game one after facing an eight-run deficit, Hallett's claim of "champions" certainly fits.

Gillespie got the Falcons on the board in a big way in the first before Airport tied it in the bottom half of the inning. Then Flora took the lead in the second and did not look back.

"It's a dream come true," Gillespie said. "It felt good to get my team started and get everything going."

AC Flora and Airport finish the season at 26-6.
