Dillon defense overpowers Fairfield Central to win 2A state title

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) â?? Freshman Avery McCall threw three first-half touchdowns to lead Dillon to a 21-6 victory over Fairfield Central on Friday night for the Class 2A, Division I State Championship.

The Wildcats (13-1) won their third state championship in five years.

McCall, who took over the starting job in the final game of the regular season, opened the scoring with a 23-yard pass to Ereon Hayes with 7:05 remaining in the first quarter. He added a 33-yarder to Anthony Blue with 6:36 left in the half, then threw an 18-yard strike to Ezra Lighty 29 seconds before intermission.

McCall threw for 128 yards and Blue had 202 yards rushing as Dillon had 429 yards total offense.

Fairfield Central (11-3) got a 17-yard scoring run from Damian Bell in the first quarter but three interceptions â?? including one in the end zone â?? stopped scoring threats. The Griffins had 277 yards total offense.
