COLUMBIA (WACH)- Our week one Game to WACH features two teams looking to avenge disappointing finishes to last season: Airport vs. Brookland-Cayce.
The Eagles and Bearcats both jumped out to good starts in 2013, but faded towards the end of the season and are ready to renew their rivalry Friday night.
"It's a great rivarly to be a part of and we're excited about it," Airport head coach Kirk Burnett said.
The Eagles finished 3-7 last season, but Burnett says his team's athleticism should be able to turn things around in 2014.
"We're very fast," Burnett said. "We've got some skill guys that can run and I'm hoping that our speed can overcome some of our other problems."
The Bearcats got an early start to the 2014 season with a thrilling 29-28 double-overtime win over Fairfield Central in Week Zero. Head coach Rusty Charpia says he just wants his team to continue focusing on getting better each week so they can avoid a slow finish like last year.
"We've tried not to emphasize these early games except for the fact to try and get better every week," Charpia said. "In 3A, none of the games really matter. It's how you play in the region."
Despite this matchup not being a region contest, it still should provide plenty of fireworks as bragging rights are on the line. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bearcats Stadium.
