LEXINGTON (WACH)- Fresh off of a state championship in his senior season, Lexington High School catcher Nick Ciuffo announced Tuesday he will accept an invitation to attend the 2013 MLB Draft in New York.
"I got the email and jumped out of my seat," Ciuffo smiled. "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity."
Ciuffo is rated MLB.com's 25th best prospect in the upcoming draft. The South Carolina AAAA Player of the Year hit .453 with five homers, 33 RBI and had a .541 on-base percentage.
A South Carolina commit, Ciuffo is confident with whatever his future holds.
"I have a win-win situation," Ciuffo said. "I either go play pro ball, which is what I've wanted to do my entire life, or I go play at South Carolina and win a couple national championships."
Although Ciuffo plans to attend the draft, wherever he is selected depends on the decision he makes.
"It's not just a money thing," Ciuffo said. "It's a matter of 'Can I advance in the system and is it a good system to be in?'"
Whatever decision is made, one program is getting a confident player.
