Lexington's Ciuffo wins Gatorade Player of the Year award

LEXINGTON, S.C. (WACH) -- Lexington High School catcher Nick Ciuffo has been named the 2012-13 Gatorade South Carolina Baseball Player of the Year.

Ciuffo is the first player from Lexington High School to earn the award.

The South Carolina signee led the Wildcats to the Class AAAA state championship this month, batting .468 with five home runs and 33 RBI for the season.

Ciuffo was also named the Class AAAA player of the year last week. He has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Gamecocks this fall, but is also projected as an early-round selection in June's Major League Baseball draft. Ciuffo has been invited to the draft in New York and plans to attend.

Last week, Ciuffo said no matter what happens in his future, he will be on the right track.

"I have a win-win situation," said Ciuffo. "I either go play pro ball, which is what I've wanted to do my entire life, or I go play at South Carolina and win a couple national championships."
