COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Raquon Davenport scored 15 points to pace four Newberry players in double figures and Newberry erased the disappointment of two straight losses in the Class 2A boys championship games with a 77-47 dismantling of Lake Marion on Saturday afternoon at the Colonial Life Arena.
Trey Miller, Bennett Wilson and Jaylen Lindsay each chipped in 14 points in the balanced Bulldogs attack. Lindsay added 11 rebounds as Newberry won the rebounding battle against the taller Lake Marion team.
The Bulldogs (25-4) had a 56-20 advantage on points in the paint and a 28-8 lead on fast break points.
The game was tied at 13 with 3:12 remaining in the first quarter when Newberry closed the quarter on a 12-3 run. The lead steadily grew from that point until it reached the 30-point margin at games end.
This avenged a 91-82 loss to Lake Marion a season ago. Michael Rhodes was the leading scorer for the Gators (26-2) with 12 points.
