River Bluff set to open first season in Class 4A

River Bluff opens its first full season in Class 4A Saturday against Westwood.

Lexington, S.C. (WACH)- David Bennett is no stranger to starting a football program from the bottom.

The River Bluff Gators will begin their first full football season in Class 4A on Saturday when they host Westwood.

"We've had some good scrimmages, but we're a little banged up right now," Bennett said. "But when people come to see the Gators play, you've got to put a team out there no matter who's out."

Bennett has always been up for a challenge. He was the inaugural head coach at Coastal Carolina where he won four conference championships in nine seasons, and he hopes to have the same success in his first stint at coaching at the high school level.

"You go through what we went through there (Coastal) and you realize it's not about you," Bennett said. "It's not about I and me, it's about us and we. That's what we say around here."

There will be plenty of bumps along the way for the Gators. Bennett says most of his kids have never played at the varsity 4A level, but it's not all about the wins and losses to the head coach.

"We've got some talented kids, but we want to see them mature," Bennett said. "We want them to understand how important it is to come to work everyday."

The Gators and Westwood kickoff Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
