Beal returns, No. 2 USC shuts out Coastal

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - South Carolina pitcher Evan Beal made his first appearance of the year, and combined with three other pitchers for a one-hit shutout in a 4-0 win over Coastal Carolina Wednesday at Carolina Stadium.

The second-ranked Gamecocks tallied their 10th shutout of the season with the victory, which is just four shy of a program record. South Carolina is now 21-3 on the year while the loss drops the Chanticleers to 10-15.

Beal, who is coming off a preaseason stress reaction in his back, made his first appearance since last season and worked four hitless innings, striking out three batters. He retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced.

Sophomore Curt Britt picked up his first win of the season after three scoreless innings of work. Britt allowed just one hit and struck out four batters. Coastal Carolina starter Dalton Moats suffered the loss and is 0-3 for the year.

Marcus Mooney delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the second to give South Carolina a 2-0 lead. They didn't need any more runs.

The Gamecocks are back in action on Friday when they start a three-game SEC series with Tennessee. First pitch for the series opener is set for 7 p.m. at Carolina Stadium.
