Big bats power Clemson to doubleheader sweep

COLLEGE PARK, MD. (WACH) - Clemson swept a Friday doubleheader at Maryland thanks to a power surge on the road.

Steve Wilkersonâ??s three-run homer in the first inning and Chris Okeyâ??s two-run homer in the fifth inning of the day's second game lifted No. 20 Clemson to a 7-1 win over No. 25 Maryland at Bob Smith Stadium Friday night.

The Tigers improved to 17-9 and 8-3 in ACC play while the Terrapins dropped to16-8 and 5-6 in conference play.

Matthew Crownover (5-2) earned the win by pitching his first career complete game. Maryland starter Mike Shawaryn (5-1) suffered his first loss of the year.

In game one, Shane Kennedy went 4-for-4 with a homer and the go-ahead, run-scoring triple in the ninth inning to power Clemson to a 3-1 win.

Kennedyâ??s solo shot in the second inning was the gameâ??s only run until pinch-hitter Michael Montville hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to tie the score. But Kennedy came through with a triple in the ninth inning to score Steve Wilkerson and later came home on Jay Baumâ??s sacrifice fly.

Daniel Gossett (3-0) pitched eight strong innings to earn the win. He gave up eight hits, one run, one walkand struck out six batters. Matt Campbell recorded his fifth save of the year. Maryland reliever Brandon Casas (0-1) suffered the loss.

The series concludes Saturday at 2 p.m.
