Former Gamecock football coach Warren Giese dies

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) -- Former University of South Carolina head football coach Warren Giese has died.

Giese passed away Thursday in Columbia. He was 89.

He coached the Gamecocks from 1956 to 1960, compiling a 28-21-1 record over five years. His 28 wins are eighth-most all-time at South Carolina.

Giese's best season was in 1958 when he led the Gamecocks to a 7-3 record, including a 5-2 mark in the ACC and finished the season ranked 13th in the country.

Giese played football at Oklahoma and Central Michigan. He also served in the Navy.

The Wisconsin native also had a career in politics. He was elected to the South Carolina Senate in the mid-1980's and retired in 2004 as the second-oldest serving South Carolina senator.

Giese is survived by his wife Phyllis and four children.
