      Gamecock bats deliver win over Charleston Southern

      COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - South Carolina tallied 12 hits including a pair of home runs from TJ Costen and LB Dantzler as the No. 11 Gamecocks defeated Charleston Southern 9-5 on Tuesday night in non-conference action at Carolina Stadium.

      South Carolina improves to 23-6 while the loss drops Charleston Southern to 11-17.

      Senior right-hander Colby Holmes earned the win and improves to 3-2 on the season. He pitched 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Three other Gamecock pitchers combined for the remaining 5.2 innings. Charleston Southern starting pitcher Stephen Leopard suffered the loss and is now 1-2 on the year.

      The Gamecocks broke the game open by putting up four runs in the second inning.

      The Buccaneers cut the Gamecocks lead in half scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning. TJ Costen answered with his first home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth. The two-run blast gave South Carolina a 6-2 lead.

      Charleston Southern responded with two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the Carolina lead back to two runs.

      The Gamecocks collected two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to go ahead 8-4. Max Schrock delivered his second triple of the season to start the inning. Schrock went 3-for-5 tying a career-high for hits in a game and scored two runs. Schrock scored on a RBI single by Grayson Greiner that inning.. Greiner then stole second, advanced to third after Costen and Chase Vergason both walked, and scored on a wild pitch.

      LB Dantzler increased the lead to 9-4 in bottom of the eighth inning as he launched a 3-1 pitch over the wall in left field for his team-leading 10th home run of the season. Woodall homered in the top of the ninth inning for the final run of the game for CSU.

      The Gamecocks are back in action Wednesay in Greenville with another non-conference game against Furman at Fluor Field in Greenville. First pitch is set for 7pm.
