Gamecock guard out with torn ACL

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - University of South Carolina incoming freshman Shamiek Sheppard has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and is expected to miss the 2014-15 season.

Head coach Frank Martin made the announcement Tuesday. He says the six-foot-six, 220-pound Sheppard is set to undergo surgery for the torn ligament in his right knee this week in Columbia.

"We feel awful for Shamiek with his injury," said head coach Frank Martin. "He has worked so hard to put himself in position to play at South Carolina. We look forward to supporting him through his surgery and rehab this season."

Sheppard, a three star guard from Brooklyn, averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds per game at Fishburne Military School in Virginia last season.

Sheppard had enrolled in USCâ??s first summer semester.
