Gamecocks take series from LSU behind strong effort from Wynkoop

Behind Jack Wynkoop's seven scoreless innings pitched, the Gamecocks defeated LSU 4-0 on Sunday to take the series.

BATON ROUGE, LA (WACH)- The No. 10 Gamecocks scored three runs in the first two innings and Jack Wynkoop tossed seven strong innings as USC defeated No. 2 LSU 4-0 on Sunday to take the series 2-1. The Gamecocks are now 33-12 overall and 13-8 in the SEC.

Wynkoop (6-2) followed his performance last week against Kentucky with a dominant effort on Sunday against the Tigers. The freshman allowed just five hits through seven innings and did not give up a run. Tyler Webb pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 14th save of the season.

The Gamecocks got on the board in the first inning when LB Dantzler roped an RBI double past Mason Katz at first base to score Chase Vergason. Max Schrock followed that up with an RBI single to score Dantzler.

LSU threatened in the eighth with a runner on, but Tanner English made a brilliant catch in left-center to end the Tigers chances.

USC returns to action Friday night when they host Vanderbilt in a three-game series at Carolina Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. and will be televised on SportSouth.
