Gamecocks women's basketball seek fourth straight Sweet 16 appearance
COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) -- After steamrolling their way through UNC Asheville on Friday night, the Gamecocks women's basketball team will look to advance to their fourth straight Sweet 16 tonight when they take on Arizona State.
The Gamecocks (28-4) will have the advantage of playing at Colonial Life Arena this evening, a place they've won their last five NCAA Tournament games. Despite winning those contest with an average margin of victory of 33.3 points, South Carolina comes into tonight's game as just a 13-point favorite. Arizona State (20-12) is regarded as one of the top defenses in the country and have not allowed more than 58 points this season.
That should make things interesting as far as what we see with the starting lineup tonight, as coach Dawn Staley decided to go with a shorter, faster and more experience bunch oppose to having more height on the court in Friday night's win. This of course comes just days after Staley announced that star senior center Alaina Coates will not play in the NCAA Tournament as she nurses a right ankle injury.
Following Friday night's win, coach Staley and Allisha Gray talked about how the team has rallied together to not only fill the void of Coates presence on the court but off of it as well.
Tip-off for tonight's game is slated for 7 PM on ESPN. WACH FOX will have all your highlights and reaction tonight in sports at 10.
