Former South Carolina State coach Willie Jeffries is now a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. He was among 24 inductees Saturday along with Barnwell County native Troy Brown.
Jeffries led the Bulldogs from 1973 to 1979, before becoming the first African-American coach in Division 1-A history when he was named head coach for Wichita State. He also coached at Howard before his second stint at SC State from 1989 to 2001.
Current South Carolina State Coach Buddy Pough, Jeffries' successor, also attended the ceremony.
