Moore, Samuel named to preseason award watch lists
COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) – Two USC football players have been named to two distinct awards watch lists, it was announced Monday.
Senior linebacker Skai Moore was named to the Butkus Award watch list while junior wide receiver Deebo Samuel was named to the Paul Hornung Award watch list.
The Butkus Award is handed out to the nation’s best linebacker and named after Dick Butkus, whom NFL Films considers the best defensive player in football history.
The Paul Hornung Award is given out to the best “versatile player” in major college football. Hornung was a Hall of Fame running back for the Green Bay Packers from 1957-1962 and then from 1964-1966.
Moore returns to the Gamecocks after sitting out last season due to a neck injury. Moore was named to the preseason All-SEC second-team by both Athlon magazine and by the media attending the SEC Media Days.
Moore has tallied 260 career tackles, needing 47 to move into the school’s all-time top-10. Moore also led the team in tackles for three-consecutive seasons from 2013-2015, the first player to do so since Tony Watkins from 1992-1994.
Samuel was named to the preseason first-team All-SEC as an all-purpose back and second-team as a kick returner by Athlon. Samuel has 71 career catches for 944 yards and has scored nine career touchdowns.
