COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Frank Martin understands he'll need to act like a resolute father and a basketball coach for his second season at South Carolina.
Martin had four veterans transfer out after last season and brought in seven freshmen, making up about half his roster and broadening the skillset he'll need to bring to practice for a while. Martin says it can be like handling his 6-year-old son at times, the players frustrated and angry when being instructed on the same things over and over.
Martin says the process is wearing, although a necessary one with the Gamecocks forced to quickly rely on the newcomers.
It will be at least a month before the Gamecocks have their complete backcourt with Bruce Ellington finishing up football and Tyrone Johnson ineligible until mid-December.
South Carolina hosts USC-Aiken in exhibition play on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Colonial Life Arena. Admission is free.
