COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH/AP) -- South Carolina men's basketball assistant Matt Figger has been promoted to associate head coach.
Head coach Frank Martin announced the move Wednesday. Figger had been the team's recruiting coordinator and will remain in that role. He moves into the spot vacated by Brad Underwood, who became Stephen F. Austin's head coach this past spring.
"Matt has been with me from day one at Kansas State, and he is as ready as anyone can be to take on head coaching duties. I'm excited for what he brings to our program every single day, and he'll remain responsible for the same things that he has done up to this point," said Martin. "I just want everyone to understand and know - players, and everyone who is around us - that Matt is ready to take on the challenge of being a head coach."
Figger also has spent time on the coaching staffs at Arkansas and South Alabama.
South Carolina begins practice for the 2013-14 season on Monday, Sept. 30, with a morning practice at Colonial Life Arena.
