Recap: Severe storms strike Midlands

NWS Confirmed Tornadoes

Severe storms struck across the Midlands Sunday and officials are still sizing up the extent of damage.

In a preliminary report released Sunday evening, Columbia's National Weather Service Office confirmed two tornadoes in Lexington County.

The first tornado, an EF-0 with peak winds of 80 miles per hour, traveled nearly half a mile on the northeast side of Lexington. The tornado began near Saddlebrooke Road and traveled 0.4 miles to Kenwood Drive. No injuries or fatalities were attributed to this tornado. However, the tornado downed numerous hardwood and softwood trees. Some of those trees fell onto homes and vehicles.

The second tornado, an EF-1 with peak winds of 95 mph, proved to be more impactful. It traveled nearly one and a half miles downing trees onto homes and vehicles. The tornado began near Saluda Shoals Park and traveled exactly 1.4 miles before dissipating just before it reached Bower Parkway and the Columbiana Station Shopping Center. No injuries or fatalities were attributed to this tornado.

The NWS is dispatching two storm survey teams into the field Monday to determine if tornadoes hit Fairfield and Lancaster Counties.

Aside from tornadoes, many locations saw strong winds. The highest non-tornadic wind report came from Columbia Metropolitan Airport with a gust of 74 mph. Nearly every county in the Midlands reported some form of wind damage.

Midlands residents should monitor damaged trees and hanging debris through Thursday as winds will remain gusty for several days. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect until 8:00 p.m. Monday to warn boaters on local water ways that winds may be strong enough to capsize small boats.
