COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) -- South Carolina quarterback Ryan Hilinski is known for being a leader on the field. But with the coronavirus pandemic canceling the remainder of spring football for the Gamecocks, the rising sophomore has turned his attention to helping others while he's away from the field.
“I figured with all this negativity in this world right now there should be some positives,” explained Hilinski, via Skype. “Quite frankly, I've been sitting around too much. I get my workouts in - I do all that stuff but you know I still have so much time in my day.”
On Friday, Hilinski took to Twitter to share a new project he's working on called hope packages. The QB is sending handwritten letters and a Hilinski hope wristband to those who are living in elderly communities that can’t be in contact with others as they practice social distancing.
“It has the Hilinki's hope logo on the front,” explained Hilinski about the cards he’s sending. “Inside it has a message that just says, 'hey, we're with you; you're not alone. I'm the quarterback at the University of South Carolina and I look up to you guys. I thank you for everything you've done with us. I might not know you personally but still thank you and write back if you ever need to keep talking,’ stuff like that, and maybe I'll be able to build a relationship. (with them)”
As of Friday afternoon, Hilinski wrote 50 handwritten messages; that's just in one day. He plans to continue to write more to reminded those in need that they're not alone.
“If you want to go fast then, go alone. If you want to go far, then go together. So, that's my motto - that's our family's motto, that's what we go by. We're all in this together so that's what we think about whenever we try to do good for others.”
