Columbia, S.C.(WACH)-- A Midlands woman knows how to turn tragedy into triumph.

While in college, Shamieka Sims, received news that no one wants to hear. Doctors found a tumor in her brain. The tumor was benign and removed however just a few years later more devastating news came along after she lost someone close to her.

"About 2013, I lost my sister, she was always collecting my old clothing and saying someone can use them at some point. So I wanted a way to honor her and I was encouraged by my husband Michael to do something where we could give items away."

Shamieka and her husband were determined to give back and started the Grieving Needs Foundation.

For the past four years, the couple has provided food and clothing to more than 80 families in Fairfield County.

"It's not jut the food and clothing its the resources. There are a lot of people who don't know how to track down the resources that they need so they can meet their basic needs. So we've found a way of combining those resources and sharing them with the community" said Sims.

Whether its her foundation, a Girl Scout Troop, or reigning as Miss South Carolina Plus America, Sims says giving back is something everyone can do.

"Find something small. Whether is cleaning out your closet and donating those items, cleaning out your pantries and giving it to one of the food banks in the county, there's something that everyone can doesn't take a lot so if you ahve the willpower to do it, you can find an activity or something to do."

A small act of service that couple make a difference in the lives of others.

WACH FOX is dedicated to celebrating volunteerism and public service in our community.
