OnPoint on WACH Fox: Columbia's 'Black Wall Street'

COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) - This week on OnPoint on WACH Fox we'll tell you about a section of Columbia that some may not know about.

At one point in time, there was a area of the city known as 'Black Wall Street.' That district was in the area around Washington Street from Assembly to Gadsden Streets near what we now know as the Vista.

You might drive through that region of Columbia every single day and not even know that, for almost a century, hundreds of black-owned businesses thrived supplying numerous goods and services.

Can you imagine an area booming with black-owned grocery stores, funeral homes, theaters, insurance companies and more? No matter the need, Columbia's 'Black Wall Street' was ready to deliver.

Today, there are thousands of black-owned businesses spread throughout the city and across the Midlands. But, the roots of Columbia’s black businesses can be traced to Washington Street.

On this week's OnPoint on WACH Fox we look at the 'Black Wall Street' of yesterday and why it's still so important today.
