OnPoint on WACH Fox: Key issues up for debate as State House session winds down
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - This week on OnPoint on WACH Fox we examine the major issues still lingering at the State House as the legislative session winds down.
The legislative session will end on May 10 this year instead of in early June as lawmakers have done in the past. The move is expected to save taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars, but could also lead to some proposals not reaching the finish line and becoming law.
As time ticks down on the session, there are still a variety of issues to be addressed.
The House and Senate are at odds over how to address that failed nuclear project in Fairfield County and how they can take steps to reduce the financial impact on power customers.
The most recent effort to transition the state’s pension plans for public employees into a 401k-type retirement system is stalled. So are a number of efforts to reform gun laws and enhance school safety.
So what will get done and what won’t?
We will have a panel of political observers in studio to break down those issues.
Also, there is an important fundraising drive happening on May 1.
The fifth annual Midlands Gives campaign is asking people to donate to dozens and dozens of local non-profits in a 24-hour online blitz.
In 2017, thousands of people came together to give a total of $1.67 million for 337 local nonprofits.
