OnPoint on WACH Fox: Life after prison
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - On this week's edition of OnPoint on WACH Fox we take another look at South Carolina's prison system.
Lawmakers are looking at possible reform in the wake of a riot at Lee Correctional that killed seven inmates and injured 22 others.
State police are still investigating what it is this country's worst prison riot in a quarter-century.
There are a number of components to the corrections system and it isn't only about what happens inside the walls.
When inmates are released from prison they face an uphill battle. It’s tough to return to the community as a contributing member of society. Many say they aren't getting the tools they need to do that while they're on the inside.
Finding gainful employment or access to educational and training programs is very challenging and that can put long-term access to affordable housing out of reach for many.
In short, it can be a real struggle. Without a clear path for re-entry, too often, former inmates return to what they know.
Many times that means the very same behavior that got them locked up in the ?rst place. It doesn’t have to be that way.
This week we feature a group that has ?gured out how to succeed at life after prison. They have a message for those who are currently behind bars and former inmates who are trying to stay out.
They also have suggestions for South Carolina lawmakers as they look at ways to reform the state Department of Corrections.
