Ridge View senior named semifinalist in U.S. Presidential Scholars program
COLUMBIA, S.C. — A senior at Ridge View High School (RVHS) is one step closer to being named the most academically distinguished student in the nation.
Malika Lightbourne was named a semifinalist in the annual U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.
She is the only senior in Richland Two and other school districts in the Midlands to reach the semifinalist level.
Lightbourne is also a student in the Scholars Academy for Business and Law Magnet Program at Ridge View, and AP Scholar and received the 2017 RVHS Academic Award for Excellence in Math and the 2016 RVHS Academic Award for Excellence in Science.
She also earned a Gold rating on the National Spanish Exam earlier in the year
The Presidential Scholar will be announced early May in Washington, D.C.
Acceptance into the program is by invitation only and students are selected based on academic achievement, artistic scholarship in visual arts, creative writing or outstanding scholarship in career and technical education fields.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors.
