RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WACH) - Democrat Mia McLeod has unofficially defeated Republican Susan Brill for the SC Senate District 22 seat.

McLeod narrowly defeated Brill by a 54 to 46 margin.

The campaign between the two has been heated as Brill ran ads claiming that McLeod missed more than half of the legislative sessions while she was serving in the SC house. McLeod has refuted those claims and said she only missed one session per year over the last two.

McLeod will be taking over for Senator Joel Lourie who held the seat for the past 18 years.

Lourie announced he was retiring to focus on his business.

Lourie's father, Isadore, had that same seat for 28 years, which saw that seat held by a Lourie for 46 of the past 52 years.

With the win, McLeod will be the fourth woman in the SC Senate and will join Sandy Senn, Katrina Shealy and Margie Bright-Matthews.
